What are seed treatments?

A seed treatment is the culmination of products and ingredients to suppress, control, or repel plant pathogens, insects and/or other pests that attack seeds, seedlings and plants. Commonly used seed treatments are insecticides, fungicides and trace elements.

What are their benefits?

Seed treatments play a critical role in agriculture and the production of healthy crops. Because of their targeted accuracy, they selectively control pests, while ensuring beneficial insects remain available to keep other potential insect pests in check. Their safe and targeted use provides an efficient use of pesticides and reduces the amount of chemicals used on large areas of farmland. Because they are planted subsoil, treated seeds help minimise the exposure of insecticide to off-target plants and animals.

How are treated seeds regulated?

All insecticides & fungicides used as seed treatments in Australia have to be approved for that use. Insecticides & fungicides undergo roughly 4 years of safety studies before they are approved by the APVMA (Australian Pesticides & Veterinary Medicines Authority). We only use fungicides & insecticides that have been approved by the APVMA to ensure crop safety for both local and the export market.

Why have farmers embraced seed treatments?

  • Improved seedling emergence and health, especially in no-till or conservation tillage situations.
  • Viable alternative to foliar and soil applications.
  • Protection against some above and below-ground pests including some that introduce fungal, bacterial, and viral disease.
  • Reduction or elimination in the number of insecticide foliar sprays due to targeted protection against insect pests.
  • Higher crop yields, and reduction in the use of natural resources, energy, money and labour. • Protection for seeds and seedlings against some of the risks associated with early season planting pests.
  • A more efficient use of fungicides & Insecticides and other crop chemicals.

Seed treatments are an important part of a farmer’s integrated pest management plan. Seed treatments have been rigorously tested and proven to be a safe and effective tool contributing to the more efficient production of food, fibre and fuel.

Farmers often are able to recover the expenditure of treating the seeds due to increased output.

  • Increased Resistance to Diseases: The professional application of a viable seed dressing is proven to enhance the overall resistance to diseases in crops. It is well documented that crops infected with disease can spread the infection to other crops.
  • Improved Vigour: A professionally applied seed treatment can improve seed vigour & in-turn may lead to quicker germination and increased emergence. Plants that emerge faster tend to be fuller and more productive in comparison to their untreated counterparts.
  • Enhances the Seed: Seed dressings can assist to increase the nutritional levels in the seed. Increased nutritional levels offer greater resistance to diseases. Improved levels of nutrition also help in faster emergence. Seeds that are treated with fortifying agents show a higher percentage of germination. This in turn increases uniformly & dense plantations.
  • Plant Density: Dressing a seed empowers it to combat deadly seedling diseases and other infections. It also improves vigour in seeds. All these factors ultimately contribute to enhanced density of the crop & in turn creates maximum yield. In other words, farmers can get the benefit of maximum output if they treat their seeds before sowing.
  • Reduces the Need of Fertilizers and Insecticides: Seeds that have been professionally treated for preventing infections tend to require lower amounts of Insecticides, and herbicides. Such seeds also control the emergence of herbicide resistant weeds. All this helps farmers to save money and time by reducing the need to purchase and apply foliar sprays.
  • Eco-Friendly: Seed treatment ensures fortification of seeds with fertilizers and other formulas. This reduces the need of spraying toxic insecticides and pesticides after the plants grow. This also reduces the overall impact on the environment. It also reduces the toxic wastes that arise out of spraying herbicides and pesticides.
  • Expert Advice: Changing climatic conditions and new developments in field of pesticides and insecticides often can leave farmers wondering about the right choice for cleaning their seed. When you hire a professional company for seed cleaning, you can be rest assured that they will offer the best advice after analyzing your seed. Their professional advice can help you in maximizing your returns on the harvest.
